Ground Settlement

Due to the progressive increase in land values, low-lying areas are being increasingly being considered for the development of industrial estates, port developments, residential subdivisions or similar developments requiring the land surface levels to be raised significantly in many cases.

The reliable prediction of ground deformations in response to applied loadings from embankments, fill placement and structures associated with such developments is critical to their success.

We have been involved in many projects that have required the prediction of the consolidation settlements in very weak and soft ground conditions, including fine grained estuarine muds and fibrous peat and have carried these projects through to their construction phase to develop knowledge of the predicted versus actual performance.

We also model post construction creep settlements, with respect to acceptable limits for a particular land use, which in many cases can be the critical design element.

Ground Settlement

Our settlement work typically incorporates the following processes:

  • Prediction of consolidation settlements in very weak and soft ground conditions
  • Prediction of consolidation timeframe in relation to settlements
  • Assessment of fill placement over fine grained estuarine muds
  • Processes to accommodate fibrous peat materials
  • Modelling of post construction creep settlements
  • Assessment of consolidation/time parameters to optimise pre-load durations
